"Christina's World" by Andrew Wyeth

  1. The photo is very centered on the girl she really stands out in the picture for me was the first thing my eye went to. Next my eyes went to the house in the distance because even though it is centered more in the book the rest of the scene is so barren that your eyes instantly go to the main objects in the photo which I think was the authors intent. This picture portrays a sense of being alone. The way the girls body is positioned it seems like she is staring off in the distance maybe mourning, wishing. The way her hands are positioned it looks like she is reaching for something that is just out of her reach. The colors are very subdued, it gives the whole picture a sense of loneliness for me. The artist uses different colors for the field where she is sitting compare to up where the house is, this helps shows the distance between the girl and the house. The whole picture to me has a strong sense of isolation.

  2. This image suggests a very strong feeling of isolation. The way that the woman is positioned on the ground infers helplessness and desperation. The fact that her head is turned suggests a level of shyness or difference. The plain pallet of colors used have a very ominous feel and reminds me of a calm before the storm. Also, the dark shadows on the house and its shear distance from the woman suggests that no help is too be found. Perhaps she was walking though the field and twisted her ankle? Perhaps there is an audible cry for help that is not present in the image?

  3. WHEN I LOOK AT THIS PHOTO MANY QUESTIONS COME TO MY MIND.... I ASK IS THIS RUNNING AWAY FROM HOME? DID THIS GIRL GET KICKED OUT OF HER HOME? WHY DOES THIS GIRL LOOK LIKE MY ENGLISH 151 TEACHER SAMANTHA MUDD? WHY IS SHE JUST SITTING IN THE GRASS? THEN I START TO ANALYZE THIS PHOTO AND I THINK THAT THIS GIRL HAS RAN AWAY FROM HOME AND NOW SHE IS LOOKING AT IT AND DEBATING ON IF SHE REALLY WANTS TO LEAVE OR STAY. SHE MIGHT HAVE SISTERS OR BROTHERS IN THIS HOME THAT SHE MIGHT NOT WANT TO LEAVE. SHE MIGHT BE LEAVING THE HOME BECAUSE IT IS TO MUCH TO BARE. SHE COULD POSSIBLY BE LIVING IN A HOME WHERE SHE IS BEING ABUSED OR OTHER HORRIBLE THINGS OF THAT NATURE... OR THIS COULD BE A PICTURE OF INNOCENCE WHERE SHE IS JUST SITTING IN THE GRASS THINKING ABOUT HER LIFE IN GENERAL.... PICTURES LIKE THIS GIVES ME THE OPTION TO MAKE UP A STORY FROM MY PERSPECTIVE AND WHAT I SEE.... I THINK THIS IS A PICTURE THAT COULD BE VERY DEEP OR NOT DEEP AT ALL... JUST A SIMPLE LITTLE PICTURE.... SIMPLE AS CAN BE <3

  4. Looking at this painting using strategies for analyzing the compositional features of images since this is an outdoor setting the the huge open field with a house on top of the hill had to be put there for a reason. the women also is laying in the field far away from the house. I think that this is how the women imagines her home. Its far off in the distance and hard to reach. Maybe this is how she perceives the world. The world is this big empty space with something to hope for. Also i wondered why the artist decided to have the sky be a dark or overcast gray color. I think that the color of the sky really helps the mood of the painting. It would have a different effect if it was a sunny day in the painting and it really wouldn't focus your attention to the woman in the field and the house at the top of the hill.

  5. I think that this depicts the emotion of longing. I think this because this woman is laying in a meadow away from the farm where she might have work and duty. She was laying in this meadow probably relaxing far away from the house almost to picture herself away from home and duty. I suppose that this woman is gazing at the house almost as if she is looking at her life from a distance. Maybe she dreams of being away, and of world that is out there waiting for her while she is secluded in this farmhouse. Maybe this is her equivalent of looking at the stars. Instead of looking at the universal perspective of things, she is looking at the big picture of things out in this meadow away from the property lines. I guess this picture asks you to REFLECT and for you to put yourself in the place of Christina. I also want to note that the artist doesn't allow you to see her face and the start of the piece is behind her so maybe the way she looks at the house, we are looking at her looking at the house. I think he doesn't want you to see her face so that we can think more about the picture as a whole and the emotion or purpose behind the art.
