I agree that it is becoming increasingly impossible to get financial aid. For people like me who come from low-income backgrounds, college is almost impossible to afford. I think that there needs to be more funding to provide for people to go to college. I also think that the amount of aid you get shouldn't have anything to do with what your parents make.
What do you think?

Over the years, the financial aid system has become seriously flawed. The people who need financial aid to be able to go and complete college can't get it because rich kids with better grades are getting the financial aid that they don't need to go to college anyway.
ReplyDeleteWhat are solutions to this problem of the rich get richer and the poor get poorer? How can this be evened out?
Some students may receive less financial aid or more financial aid then other students. Some of these students are the first of their family to go off to college, and FAFSA and other organizations may be weary to lend out a lot of money to a family who hasn't sent or graduated any one from college. Now, if a family succeeds in graduating or keeping students in college, the younger siblings will benefit from their older siblings good work in school. Overall the inflation in college costs has hurt many students from being able to afford college on their own, and many students come out of college in debt from loans that take 10-30 years to pay off. This is a major set back for some students and graduates because a large portion of their paycheck every year is going to taxes and interest rates they have to payback. The overall funding for students, is more so out there for those that are proactive and look for long hours and try to find every scholarship they can acquire. From my personal experience I wish in high school I applied for more scholarships and took the time to dig out more applications that I qualified.
ReplyDeleteHaving some sort of college tax for students 18-24 or something could help fight the battle against inflation between college tuition and everyday life.
Completely agree. The way people are denied college funding because of what they're parents do or make shouldn't be limited. If you are qualified and have the right resume presented then you should be able to get at least some kind of funding. As long as you realize what you need to do to get that and actually do it and not expect it to be given to you, then it should not be an extreme financial challenge to get the chance to go to college.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that the gap between the rich and poor will ever be completely even, but there are definitely ways to narrow this gap. One of the best ways to narrow this gap is to improve the financial aid system. In the capitalist society we live in, many Americans believe that the poor are poor due to their own fault. This is not necessarily true. Should the children of low-income families suffer because their parents have a hard time making ends meet? I don't believe so. These children should be given every right and privilege that the children of high-income families receive. If a child from a low-income household has EARNED their right to go to college, they should be able to go. Just think how many bright young students never got the chance to attend college because of their background. Think about how better off our world would be if they had. How many more doctors would we have? Would cancer be cured? How would their education affect those around them? Would it inspire them to also strive to achieve? These are questions I ask myself in regard to this issue and I encourage you to do so as well.
ReplyDeletei do agree that college is way to expensive and more and more people are not able to pay for schooling which i think will prevent more people not to get a good education and go straight into the work force and not be able to get a well paying job which will make the economy even worse it think
ReplyDeleteI believe that the education system, especially at the undergraduate level, in a financial sense, is spiraling itself out of control. Universities today have this need to compete with one another whether is be through nicer facilities or through test scores, both of which effect the cost of each of these schools. We keep seeing increase in technology in universities but is outrageous/unreachable cost the price we have to pay for these advances?
ReplyDeleteI agree with this post completely. One thing I believe though is that you should have to earn the money you get for college. I do not think money should be just given out to every poor family out there. One should have to deserve and earn the money he/she gets.
